Compulsory insurance?

Only a year ago, the Algemene Werkgevers Vereniging Nederland, or AWVN for short, was still of the opinion that entrepreneurs should decide for themselves how they spend their income. But now they want an insurance obligation. The explanation for this U-turn is that the group of working people who are not insured is growing. Research institute TNO has calculated that of all the self-employed in the Netherlands, 80 per cent have no occupational disability insurance.

Which ZZP insurances

High risk

A part of the self-employed puts money aside in order to fill the income gap in case of illness or an accident. But almost 30 percent are not financially capable of doing so. If you fall ill, your income is forfeited but you have no access to benefits. So that's quite a risk! In this blog, we explain the risks. That is why it is wise to think as an independent entrepreneur about your business insurance. What do you insure and what do you not? Below we discuss the most important insurances you need as a self-employed person.

1. Disability insurance

This is the insurance that may soon become compulsory for everyone. Within it, you can choose between a basic insurance that only pays out in the event of very serious illnesses, or a complete disability insurance that also provides a safety net in the event of temporary problems such as a broken arm. The premium you pay depends, among other things, on your age, the insured amount and whether or not you want to carry a policy excess.

2. Liability insurance for companies

Beginning entrepreneurs often think that private insurance policies also cover damages incurred in the course of business. However, this is not the case. For these risks you need a Third Party Liability (AVB) insurance. An AVB generally only covers material risks.

3. Professional indemnity insurance

If you, as an accountant, make an incorrect declaration, this can result in damage that the client can recover from you. These claims are often very high and difficult to bear by yourself. For certain professional groups there is therefore the Professional Indemnity Insurance.

4. Inventory and goods insurance

This insurance covers all damage caused by fire, storm or water, for example. In addition, your tools, entire inventory and supplies are insured against theft. This is an
important insurance for the continuity of your business. It is already very bad if you have to deal with theft or
fire, it is even worse if it prevents you from doing your work.

5. Legal expenses insurance

If your client or customer is dissatisfied with your delivery or service, he may refuse to pay you, for example, or hold you liable for damages. Legal assistance insurance prevents you from having to pay high costs to obtain justice because the insurance company provides legal assistance. You can also ensure that your General Terms and Conditions are good and unambiguous.
