Home Van insurance including or excluding VAT

Insuring a van including or excluding VAT?

When taking out van insurance, the insurer assumes the new value of the car. Is it wise to insure your van including or excluding VAT? What is the difference?

In most cases, an entrepreneur can deduct VAT on business expenses. This also applies to a delivery van. It is therefore smart to insure your delivery van excluding VAT. This is because you can reclaim the VAT from the Tax Authorities. If you insure your delivery van excluding VAT, this means that the insured amount is lower and the premium will be cheaper as a result.

Value of accessories van

When taking out van insurance it is also a good idea to consider the value of any accessories. Insurers make a distinction between parts that are included in the car as standard and accessories that you have installed in the delivery van. All accessories that are not built into the car as standard are not insured and should be insured separately.

BPM van

BPM is an abbreviation of Tax on passenger cars and motorbikes. A car is only registered when the BPM declaration has been made and the BPM has been paid. If you are not an entrepreneur or if you do not comply with the entrepreneurs regulation, you have to report and pay the BPM for a delivery van within one month after registration. In this month you may use the public roads. For a delivery van you only pay BPM if it was first put into use on or after 1 July 2005 and you are not an entrepreneur or do not meet the entrepreneurial requirements.

Claims payment excluding VAT

If you choose to insure your delivery van without VAT, you must also take this into account in the event of damage. In that case, any damages will also be paid without the 21% tax.

If you have a damage of € 10,000, the damage payment will be without 21% VAT, namely € 7,900.
On re-purchase after damage, you can reclaim the VAT from the Tax Office.

For the WA delivery van insurance the value of the delivery van is less important. With this insurance the damage to your own delivery van is not compensated, only the damage caused to others with the delivery van. The value of the vehicle does play a role in a WA limited cover and an all-risk delivery van insurance. With an all-risk insurance the damage to your own vehicle in case of an accident will also be paid by the insurer. A WA limited hull insurance does not pay out for the damage to your delivery van after an accident, but it does pay out for damage resulting from a collision with stray animals, broken windows and theft of the delivery van.

Also pay attention to the accessories that belong to the vehicle and which you may have installed (later). The correct insured amount of your van insurance can make a big difference in case of damage.
