Do I need temporary car insurance when I go abroad?

If you take your car abroad, it is important that you know in which countries you are normally insured with your Dutch car insurance. You can check this very easily. After taking out your car insurance, you will receive a green card from the insurer. This is an international insurance certificate. The green card contains a list of countries in which your car insurance is valid. Do you arrive with a car in a country where your car insurance is not valid? Then you can take out a temporary car insurance for your stay abroad. This can often be arranged at the border.

At the moment we do not have any options for temporary holiday car insurance.

Is my car insured abroad?

Are you going abroad temporarily with your own car, for example, for your work? In many cases, you can keep your Dutch car insurance. Please check with your insurer in advance which conditions apply. Often there is a maximum duration of stay. For example, many insurers do not cover you when your car is abroad for more than half of the year. You can only get a Dutch car insurance for a car with a Dutch license plate. It is not possible to take out a car insurance in the Netherlands for a car with a foreign license plate.

Importing a car from abroad: temporary car insurance

A car imported into the Netherlands from abroad must always first be inspected by the RDW. During the inspection, the inspector checks whether the car meets all safety and environmental requirements. The details for the BPM declaration are also determined. Then you can get a Dutch license plate and take out car insurance. Such an inspection is carried out at an RDW inspection station. However, without car insurance you are not allowed to drive the car to the inspection location. Therefore, you can take out temporary car insurance. The temporary car insurance is valid for 1 or 15 days. When you have to go to the RDW inspection, you can take out the 1-day insurance. This is insurance for one day with only third-party coverage. That means you are insured for damage you cause to another person.

Temporary car insurance offers coverage in Europe

With the 1-day policy, you are only covered in the Netherlands during the drive from your home to the RDW and back again before the day of the inspection. With the 15-day temporary insurance, you have coverage in the whole of Europe.

You cannot obtain temporary car insurance for a stay abroad through Alpina. However, you can take out a 1-day or 15-day car insurance policy for an inspection appointment or when exporting a vehicle abroad.
