Blue licence plate for taxi

Taxi vehicles can be recognised by blue registration plates with black letters and numbers. Every taxi driver is legally obliged to display these. There are rules:
  1. when the taxi plate should or should not be present on the vehicle;
  2. how to apply for the licence plate;
  3. What you should do if the vehicle is sold;
  4. for transport across the border.

Exceptions

Since the introduction of the taxi badge, it has been unclear when this does or does not need to be present on the vehicle. The Infoblad Taxikenteken and the Wet Personenvervoer provides answers to this question.

Request

You can apply for a taxi registration certificate at the RDW Centre for Vehicle Technology and Information. The vehicle must also have undergone a technical inspection. In addition to the inspection documents, the application for a taxi plate must be accompanied by:

A copy of a valid IVW operator's licence

For the permit holder who is not the owner of the vehicle, a 'joint use statement' must be filled in. This can be requested from RDW.

A copy of an extract from the Chamber of Commerce (not older than one year) showing the entrepreneurship of the permit holder.

RDW checks the data for correctness and completeness and then sends a written authorisation per vehicle. The licence plate can then be purchased from a licence plate manufacturer recognised by the RDW. The RDW website contains a list of approximately 200 authorised addresses.

On sale of taxi

When the vehicle is sold, the registration certificate part I at the RDW needs to be adjusted. The text 'taxi' is then removed from the document. After receiving the amended registration document, you must exchange the blue taxi number plates for yellow ones at a plate supplier.

Transport across the border

Transportation of passengers abroad is allowed. However, it is not allowed to pick up new passengers abroad, with the exception of Belgium and Luxembourg. The blue number plate is not always recognizable as originating from the EU. It is recommended to use a NL sticker when abroad. The RDW Centre for Vehicle Technology and Information has drawn up a statement in English, French, German and Dutch that can be shown to police and customs as a 'taxi passport'.
