Which scooter insurance is right for you?

You have a scooter in your shed or driveway. Perhaps you ride it yourself or it is mostly your children who use it. Whether you use it or not, damage can occur fairly quickly. A scooter is not as sturdy as a car. When you crash into a car, it can cause significant damage.

Getting rid of a dent or scratch easily costs a few hundred euros. Not to mention the costs that someone else might suffer. Of course, you would prefer not to pay these costs yourself. For that you need scooter insurance. But do you choose for a standard insurance or a supplementary one? And what do you get insured? This page explains it all.

Need scooter insurance: minimum coverage or supplementary?

When do you make the choice to insure your scooter minimally or additionally? Below you will find some useful tips to decide which scooter insurance you need.

Value

The value of your scooter is almost the biggest factor in your choice of a minimum or additional insurance. An additional insurance is simply higher in the monthly premium. If your scooter has a fairly low value, say 500 euros, it may not be worth it. If your scooter has a value of a few thousand Euros, an additional insurance is worth considering.

Location

Your place of residence also plays a role in your choice. If you live in a busy city, you are more likely to suffer damage than if you live in a quiet village. If you live in a busy city, it is advisable to take out additional insurance.

What is insured?

When you purchase insurance, you have a choice of three types of insurance. We briefly explain below what you will be reimbursed for each type of insurance.

Third-party insurance

WA stands for "Third Party Liability". This is the minimum insurance that can be taken out. The WA insurance is also a legal obligation. You should always take out this insurance when you buy a scooter.

With third-party insurance, only damage to another person is compensated. You will not be compensated for damage to your own scooter.

WA theft and fire

This is the first additional insurance you can take out. With third-party theft and fire insurance, you are insured against theft and fire in addition to liability.

You are still not covered with this insurance against damage to your own scooter, which you caused yourself. To cover this, there is another insurance policy.

WA theft, fire and collision

Third-party theft, fire and collision insurance is the only insurance that actually covers damage you cause yourself. However, there is a condition. Under no circumstances may you have intentionally caused the damage. Did you do this? Then you will not be reimbursed.
