Suspending a Scooter: What does that mean?

Can I extend the suspension of my scooter?

If you suspend your scooter, you can do so for 1, 2 or 3 years. After this period, the suspension expires automatically. However, you can also choose to extend the suspension. You can extend your suspension from a maximum of 6 weeks before the end date of the suspension. The expiration date then simply remains the same as the end date of the old suspension. If you extend the suspension before the 6 weeks, you will not keep the old expiration date. The date you extend the suspension will then be the new expiration date after 1, 2 or 3 years. 1 month before the suspension expires, you will receive a reminder letter from the RDW. You may suspend a scooter as many times as you want.

What do you need to suspend a scooter?

To suspend a scooter you need a number of documents. If you are going to suspend the license plate at the counter, you need to bring the registration certificate, the transfer slip and a valid ID OR the registration card and the registration code. If you suspend the scooter online, you can log in with DigiD.

How can I lift the suspension of a scooter?

If you want to use the scooter again before the suspension period ends, you can lift the suspension. If you lift the suspension, it will end immediately. You cannot lift the suspension for a date in the future. If you end the suspension before the suspension period expires, you won't get a refund. However, lifting the suspension is free of charge. Yes, you can also sell a suspended scooter. Suppose you suspended the scooter some time ago, because you planned not to use it for a long time. After the scooter has been sitting unused in your barn for months, you decide to sell it anyway. Good to know is that you don't have to lift the suspension yourself before you sell the scooter. In fact, transferring the scooter to the buyer's name automatically ends the vehicle's suspension.

How long may you suspend a scooter?

You can suspend your scooter online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To suspend a scooter online, you can follow the following steps:

  1. Go to "Request suspension or renewal. Then log in with your DigiD. You will then enter the RDW service.
  2. Select the license plate number of the vehicle you want to suspend
  3. Select how long you want to suspend the vehicle (1, 2 or 3 years)
  4. Pay the suspension costs via iDeal
  5. You will then receive email confirmation of the application
  6. The license plate is suspended as soon as you receive a second e-mail from the RDW. This e-mail also contains the end date of your suspension. This e-mail is proof of your suspension, so it is important that you keep it safe.

Suspending a scooter at the vehicle registration office

If you prefer to suspend your scooter through the counter, you can follow the following steps:

  1. Go to a vehicle registration office, RDW testing station or RDW desk
  2. Bring the registration certificate and the transfer certificate OR the registration card and the registration code. Don't forget a valid ID as well.
  3. Choose how long you want to suspend the vehicle (1, 2 or 3 years)
  4. Pay the costs of the suspension
  5. You will then receive a suspension report from the employee that also includes the end date of the suspension. This is your proof of suspension, so it is important that you keep it well.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of suspending a scooter?

If you don't use your scooter for a while, it may pay off to suspend the license plate. One advantage is that you save on costs by not having to pay road tax or scooter insurance. There are several reasons to temporarily suspend a scooter. Maybe you are a real fair-weather rider and prefer not to use the scooter in autumn and winter. Or you are going abroad for a while, so you can't use the scooter. Or maybe you are physically unable to use the scooter at the moment, but would like to do so in the future. Of course, you can end the suspension period as soon as the weather becomes nice again. However, you will not then get back the money you overpaid. Suspending a scooter costs €13.40 per year. Suppose you pay about €6 per month for your scooter insurance. If you suspend the scooter from November to March, you won't have to pay any premium for 5 months, but for such a short period it doesn't really pay to suspend.
