How do I insure my vintage car against fire?

The owner of an old-timer is obliged to insure the vehicle against third-party liability (WA). However, this insurance does not cover damage caused by fire. You can include fire damage in the more extensive old-timer insurance policies.

Owners of old-timers are often more economical with the car compared to other car owners. So it makes sense to take out oldtimer insurance with the right coverage. There are three types of insurance you can choose from. Two of these forms of insurance offer coverage against damage caused by fire.

Which insurance is the best choice for the oldtimer?

Insurance is not a uniform product. It has to be a tailor-made insurance. The third-party insurance only covers damage caused by the car to others. In case of fire damage to your old-timer, you will not receive any compensation. The more extensive WA + limited casco and WA + full casco do cover this cause of damage. Below is a description of the cover provided by these types of insurance:

  • WA + limited hull - In addition to damage caused by legal liability, the insurer also pays out in the event of theft, storm and hail damage, collision with stray animals and broken windows;
  • WA + full hull - The most important addition compared to WA limited hull is the compensation for damage caused by a collision. In the event of an accident, your own insurer will pay for the damage to your old-timer.

Is fire damage a real risk?

A car can catch fire due to problems under the bonnet, but also due to arson or a fire in the garage where the car is parked. It is not very likely that your car will be damaged in this way, but you take out insurance because there is a chance anyway. The need for such insurance is also determined by the value of the old-timer. You can take your chances with a car of low value, but for more expensive cars, old-timer insurance with coverage against fire is recommended.

What do you get paid in case of fire damage?

In case of fire, the damage is often not minor. There is even a good chance that the old-timer can no longer be repaired after the fire. In that case, the insured value is paid out. When insuring an old-timer, it is generally the appraised value that is important. When taking out insurance, you have the old-timer assessed in order to determine its value. Subsequently, the value is periodically revalued by an expert.

The difference in premium between third-party and third-party + limited collision insurance is often manageable. When comparing on Alpina.nl you can easily see the difference between the two coverages. When the difference is small, you obviously prefer to choose the more extensive WA + limited casco than the WA old-timer insurance.
