Claim-free years with motorhome insurance

Claim-free years make motorhome insurance more affordable. They give the right to a discount on the premium. By taking out a motor home insurance in your name, you build up claim-free years. During the insurance year no claim on the motor home insurance entitles you to one claim-free year. By claiming you will lose your claim-free years. What else should you know about the claim-free years?

Transferring accrued claim-free years

Whether or not you have damage-free years makes a big difference for the motor home insurance. By driving without claims, most insurers allow you to build up a discount between 70 and 80%. Under certain conditions it is possible to transfer accrued claim-free years to someone else. What are the possibilities and when does this happen?

Accumulation of claim-free years

By taking out a motorhome insurance and driving without damage, you build up claim-free years. Claim-free years entitle you to a discount on the motor home insurance. How much discount you will get for one extra claim-free year differs per insurer. Actually the insurer rewards you for your driving behaviour. With for example 10 or 15 claim-free years you have reached the maximum discount.

How do you lose claim-free years?

By claiming on your motor home insurance you will lose years of claim-free time. One claim can cost you five claim-free years. Less claim-free years can cause the premium in the next insurance year to rise sharply. Not all claims will result in the loss of your accrued years. Damages insured under the WA limited casco, are not at the expense of the claim-free years. This includes, for example, windscreen damage, storm and hail damage and theft of the motorhome. In case of damage caused by a collision or vandalism, the claim on the insurance will be at the expense of your claim-free years.

Claim-free years in Roy-data

The accumulated claim-free years are fixed in the motor home insurance. When cancelling the insurance, the accrued claim-free years are released. The insurer records them in Roy-data. This is a central database in which insurers can look into and where they record accrued years. When applying for a new motor home insurance, insurers can consult Roy-data, but this is not possible when switching policies. The years are still fixed in the current insurance. In that case, you can show on the basis of the policy how many years you have built up.

Proof of claim-free years

In some cases, you have to prove the accumulated claim-free years in other ways. This can be done in the following ways:

  • Lease declaration. Motorists who have driven a lease car do not get any claim-free years registered in their name. With the lease statement, the lease company can record how many years you have driven the lease car and how many claims you have made. Based on this statement, the new insurer can allocate a number of claim-free years.
  • Waiver. In case of a divorce it is possible to allocate the claim-free years (partially) to the ex-partner who does not have the years in his/her name. With a waiver, claim-free years can be transferred.

Claim-free years accumulated abroad

In the Netherlands, insurers can look into the Roy-data system, but your years are not registered there if they were accrued abroad. You can ask the foreign insurer for a statement which shows your claim history. A condition is of course that the motor home insurance has already ended. How Dutch insurers deal with this statement differs per insurer. They can grant you claim-free years, but they can also give you an extra discount. Of course the first option is preferred. After termination of the insurance you can take the accrued years with you to the next motor home insurance.

Using claims-free years wisely

Claim-free years are fixed in the insurance. In some cases it can be smart to remove them from a policy and use them in another insurance. For example, you have an old-timer with which you have built up 10 claim-free years. You have insured this car against third-party liability for a very low premium. You can remove the claim-free years from this insurance policy and use them again for the family car for which you take out the more extensive third-party hull insurance. The advantage is greater when insuring the family car than when insuring the old-timer.

Transferring claim-free years to your child

Young people up to the age of 24 have difficulty finding affordable motorhome insurance. As parents, you would like to transfer some claim-free years to your son or daughter. This will not work. They can be transferred between partners, but not to others.

Second car scheme

When you buy a second family car, you start again with zero claim-free years. For the insurance of the second car, you therefore pay a high premium. This can change if the insurer uses the second car scheme. Then you can get an extra discount on the insurance of the second car. This discount is based on the claim-free years in the first car insurance.

Validity of claim-free years

Claim-free years that are no longer linked to a motor home insurance policy are only valid to a limited extent. In the past, claim-free years were then only valid for one year. Insurers have realised that this is an unreasonably short period. Non-linked claim-free years are now valid for three years with most insurers.
