All about motorhome insurance

With an RV, it's not just about the destination, but also the journey. Because with an RV you get to the most beautiful places, but the way there is often just as breathtaking. As soon as you arrive at your destination, you park your campervan and start enjoying your vacation. Delightful! Such a fine vehicle deserves good insurance. Are you looking for RV insurance? Then you may have discovered that they are not the cheapest insurances. However, by comparing providers you can get the best and cheapest insurance for your camper. To give you a helping hand, we have developed a handy online tool at Alpina.nl that allows you to easily compare different motor home insurance policies. As soon as you have found your camper insurance you can take out an insurance policy directly online. This way you can soon go on holiday with your camper without any worries!

Is motorhome insurance mandatory?

Yes, RV insurance is mandatory. This is because a camper is a motorized vehicle. In the Netherlands, you are required to take out at least third-party coverage for every motorized vehicle. With a WA motor home insurance you are insured for damage you cause to another person with your motor home. In the best-case scenario, this is eye damage, but there may also be personal injury. After a serious accident, in which one or more persons are injured, the costs can run into thousands of euros. To prevent you from not being able to pay this and thus the victims from receiving financial compensation, motorhome insurance is mandatory.

Motorhome insurance coverages

Third-party liability (WA)

This is the basic and cheapest coverage in a motorhome insurance policy. It covers the damage you cause with your motorhome to third parties, but not damage to your own motorhome.

Limited cover (WA plus or WA+)

In addition to the third-party coverage, damage to your motorhome is now also covered for fire, theft, storm and window breakage on a motorhome insurance policy. Damage to your own motorhome that you have caused yourself (through a collision, for example) is not covered.

Full casco (all risk)

This is the most comprehensive coverage in motorhome insurance. Everything covered under limited hull is covered, but now all damage to your own motorhome is also covered.

Additional motorhome insurance coverage

Legal aid recovery

For damage caused by others, you can hold the person responsible liable. If your camper has comprehensive insurance, the insurer will do that for you. With the WA and WA limited casco you do it yourself. You can use the free service of 112schade.nl. Recourse legal assistance also entitles you to legal assistance. That can come in handy in legal issues with the other party.

Claims passenger insurance

Due to an accident, your passengers may also suffer damages. It can be material damage or personal injury. The amount of material damage is often manageable. The same is certainly not true of personal injury. The passengers' health insurance company will cover the medical expenses, but the financial damage can be much greater. In the case of permanent disability, the damage can run into the hundreds of thousands of euros. The passenger indemnity insurance pays out a maximum of €400,000 in an accident. The driver of the motorhome also receives benefits in the event of damage. Of course, you cannot claim damage to the motorhome on this additional insurance.

What does campervan insurance cost?

The cost of RV insurance depends on the following factors:

  • Your place of residence
  • The number of claim-free years you have accumulated
  • The value of the motor home
  • The weight of the camper
  • The desired RV insurance coverage
Cheap motor home insurance

There is a special cheap camper insurance for motorhomes. When you go on vacation, you want everything taken care of so you can hit the road worry-free. Whatever coverage you choose, with the cheap camper insurance from Alpina.nl you will always travel well insured.
RV insurance differs from normal car insurance. One of the differences is that this insurance is generally cheaper than car insurance because you drive less with a motorhome than with a car. As a result, the insurance company runs less risk and can lower the insurance premium. Is your RV a little older? Then a third-party coverage might be sufficient. This again will save you on the premium. It is also a good idea to compare different providers so you can easily find the cheapest insurance. Each insurer uses different premiums.

What is the best motorhome insurance?

The best RV insurance depends on your personal situation and needs. There are several insurance companies that offer RV insurance, so it is important to compare the different options to find the best insurance for you. Look at the coverage, cost and extras offered with each insurance policy. For example, if you travel a lot, it might be wise to choose insurance with a broad coverage area. If you have a smaller budget, you may want to choose insurance with a lower premium. It's important to compare all options to find the best RV insurance that suits you.

Claim-free years with motorhome insurance

Claim-free years make RV insurance more affordable. This is because they entitle you to a discount on the premium. By taking out insurance in your name, you build up claim-free years. Not claiming any damage during the insurance year entitles you to one claim-free year. By claiming, on the other hand, you lose claim-free years.

Motorhome and road tax

When you take your RV on the road, you have to pay road tax. Is your motorhome 40 years old or older? Then you don't pay road tax. The amount of road tax depends on the weight of your RV, where you live and the type of fuel. Often RVs are used only a few weeks a year and a more favorable rate applies than for passenger cars.

Self-building motorhomes and motorhome insurance

Do you have a self-built motorhome? If so, it is also possible to insure it through us on a motorhome insurance policy. In most cases without an additional inspection report. Is your self-built camper fitted as a camper and also approved as such by the RDW? Then it is no problem to have it insured as a camper. Easily calculate the premium for a self-built camper online.

Insuring the inventory of your RV

The motor home insurance policy does not cover damage to the inventory. This is because it is not part of the motor home and therefore excluded from motor home insurance. However, a fully equipped motorhome represents a high value of inventory. You can insure the inventory up to a maximum of €10,000. Regardless of the cover chosen for the motorhome, compensation is given for the stolen inventory in the event of a burglary. That is, if you have additional insurance.

Motorhome insurance including green card

Our motorhome insurance always includes the green card. The green card was mainly used at border controls to show that your camper was insured. Usually you don't need the green card anymore, because since 2003 authorities within the EU countries use the license plate of your camper for this purpose. Do you have insurance but have you lost your green card? Then you can apply for this free of charge.

Frequently asked questions about motorhome insurance

How do I take out camper van insurance?

Get motorhome insurance by filling in the following information in Alpina's calculation module:

  1. What are the characteristics of the motor home
  2. How would you like to insure the motorhome
  3. Additional information, including a valuation report, kilometres per year and years without claims

Do I need a green card when I go abroad?

The motor home insurance is valid in those countries for which the green card has been issued. This means that the countries that have NOT been crossed out on the back of the green card are insured. Read more

Is there a deductible for RV insurance?

With WA-extra or All-risk coverage, there is usually a deductible. However, this depends on the insurer.

Can you temporarily insure an RV?

If you want to temporarily insure an RV, there are two options:

  1. You take out regular insurance for your RV. If you no longer want to insure the camper, you can suspend the insurance. To do so, you must suspend the license plate at the RDW and the camper must be off the public road.
  2. Take out temporary insurance through our website. This is temporary insurance if you are going to export the motorhome abroad.

With most RV insurance, the company has taken into account the fact that you are not going to drive the RV all year. Therefore, the premium is comparatively cheaper than insurance for a passenger car.

Is my motorhome insured if I loan it out?

Yes, the motorhome is insured when you lend it out, but only when this is not of a business nature. If you lend the motorhome to a family member or an acquaintance, for example, this is no problem. However, you should be aware that the person to whom you lend the campervan may also cause damage. This could affect your excess and any accumulated damage-free years. So be careful when lending your campervan.

Are you renting out your motorhome? If so, indicate this when you take out the insurance. The insurer will charge an additional fee for renting out the motorhome. It is important to read the terms and conditions of the insurance policy to find out if the insurance covers renting out the motorhome. If you rent out your RV, it is also important to use an alarm company to protect your RV from theft.
