Claim-free years with moped insurance

Damage-free years make a moped insurance more affordable. They give the right to a discount on the premium. By taking out a moped insurance in your name, you build up claim-free years. By not claiming any damage on the moped insurance during the insurance year, you are entitled to one claim-free year. By claiming you will lose more years of damage free insurance. What else should you know about the claim-free years?

Transferring accrued claim-free years

Whether or not you have damage-free years makes a big difference for the moped insurance. With most insurers you can build up a discount between 70 and 80% when you drive damage free. Under certain conditions it is possible to transfer accrued claim-free years to someone else. What are the possibilities and when does this happen?

Accumulation of claim-free years

By getting a moped insurance in your name and driving without damage, you build up claim-free years. Claim-free years entitle you to a discount on the moped insurance. How much discount you will get for one extra claim-free year differs per insurer. Actually the insurer rewards you for your driving behaviour. With for example 10 or 15 damage free years you have reached the maximum discount.

How do you lose claim-free years?

By claiming on your moped insurance, you will lose damage-free years. One claim can cost you five claim-free years. Due to fewer claim-free years, the premium in the next insurance year can increase significantly. You will not lose your accrued years with all claims. Damages insured under the WA limited casco, are not at the expense of the claim-free years. This concerns for example windscreen damage, storm and hail damage and theft of the moped. In case of damage caused by a collision or vandalism, the claim on the insurance will be at the expense of your claim-free years.

Claim-free years not in Roy-data

The accumulated claim-free years are fixed in the moped insurance. When ending the insurance the accrued claim-free years are released. With car insurance, the insurer records them in Roy-data. This is a central database in which insurers can look and record accrued years.

When cancelling a moped insurance, you will receive a cancellation statement. An insurer will only issue this once. So be careful with it. A new insurer can only take over the claim-free years on the basis of an original disqualification statement.

Claim-free years accumulated abroad

In the Netherlands, insurers can look into the Roy-data system, but your years are not registered there if they were accrued abroad. You can ask the foreign insurer for a statement which shows your claim history. A condition is of course that the moped insurance has already ended. How Dutch insurers deal with this statement differs per insurer. They can grant you claim-free years, but they can also give you an extra discount. Of course the first option is preferred. After termination of the insurance you can take the accrued years with you to the next moped insurance.

Using claims-free years wisely

Claim-free years are fixed in the insurance. In some cases it can be smart to remove them from a policy and use them in another insurance. For example, you have an old-timer with which you have built up 10 claim-free years. You have insured this car against third-party liability for a very low premium. You can remove the claim-free years from this insurance policy and use them again for the family car for which you take out the more extensive third-party hull insurance. The advantage is greater when insuring the family car than when insuring the old-timer.

Transferring claim-free years to your child

Young people up to 24 years of age have difficulty finding affordable moped insurance. As parents, you would like to transfer some claim-free years to your son or daughter. That will not work. They can be transferred between partners, but not to others.

Validity of claim-free years

Claim-free years that are no longer linked to a moped insurance are only valid to a limited extent. In the past claim-free years were only valid for one year. Insurers have realised that this is an unreasonably short period. Most insurers now allow claims-free years that are not linked to an insurance policy to be valid for three years.
