Am I insured for a winter sports accident?

Are you going on a winter vacation this year? A few days of carefree skiing on snow-covered slopes.
Yet accidents are in a small corner and unfortunately occur with some regularity. What about your insurance? We list it for you below.

Liability in case of a skiing accident

Third-party insurance for private individuals is also known as third-party insurance. Unlike third-party insurance for motor vehicles, third-party insurance for private individuals is not compulsory. It is, however, advisable to take out this insurance. Liability damages can be high and the premium is usually relatively low.

If you are involved in a skiing accident, you can claim against your liability insurance company. If you yourself have suffered injury at the hands of another skier, you can hold the skier responsible if he or she did not comply with the rules of conduct.

Ski accident abroad

Almost all ski accidents take place abroad, because there are simply no snow-covered mountains in the Netherlands. Therefore, the skiing accident has an international character. The liability insurance usually offers coverage abroad. You can check in the policy conditions whether this is only in Europe or worldwide.

It is also very important for the insurance company that you collect evidence in order to hold someone else liable for the personal injury you have suffered. This can be done by taking photographs of the accident. It is also advisable to write down the name and telephone number of bystanders, so that they can serve as witnesses should the need arise.

To prevent accidents, rules have been drawn up for all piste users.

10 rules on the slopes

The Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS) has 10 official rules that skiers and snowboarders must observe on the slopes.

  1. Be considerate of other skiers and snowboarders
  2. Control your speed
  3. Choose a safe route
  4. Catch up gently
  5. Be careful when merging and crossing
  6. Don't just stand still on the piste
  7. Always climb and walk on the side of the piste
  8. Observe "traffic signs" and slope markings
  9. Always provide assistance in case of accidents
  10. Always make sure you can identify yourself

The advice remains to check your insurances well before departure, so you will not be faced with (unpleasant) surprises, if you are involved in an accident on the slopes.
