Parental liability insurance: are children co-insured?

As a parent, you are naturally responsible for your children. You try to look after them as well as you can, but children are boisterous. When they are busy playing at a friend's house, it can happen that they accidentally knock something over or break it. And let that be the antique vase or expensive television. Oh dear, expensive joke. If you take out liability insurance with family cover, children are usually also insured. We tell you more about it!

Up to what age are children co-insured?

With most insurers, children are co-insured from the age of 27. Your child must live with you. Does your child live in a room while studying? Then they are still insured on the family coverage of your liability insurance. Only when your child is older than 27, no longer lives at home for another reason than study or gets married, they have to take out their own liability insurance. The maximum age up to which your children are co-insured may differ per insurer. Therefore, always check the policy conditions of your insurance company.

Parents remain liable until the children are 14 years old

Children under the age of 14 are not held responsible for damage they cause. This is because it is considered that children under the age of 14 are not yet able to oversee the consequences of their actions. From the age of 14 onwards, your child is still covered by your liability insurance policy, but deliberate damage is less likely to be compensated. It is expected that your child is old enough to take more responsibility.

What is covered?

Liability insurance covers damage that you or someone else in your family causes to property or persons. With a family coverage, not only your own family is insured, but also resident parents, parents-in-law or grandparents, lodgers, staff and pets. So you are insured if your child rides a bicycle into the neighbour's car, but also if your dog jumps on your parents' sofa a little too enthusiastically. This is both covered by a liability insurance with family coverage.

In addition to material damage, you are also insured for personal injury. This means that you are also covered if your child accidentally causes physical injury to someone, for example during sports.

When is there no coverage?

There are a number of exceptions in which liability insurance does not cover your children. An insurer will not pay compensation in the following situations:

  • In the event of intent. For example damage caused by vandalism, arson or joyriding. If the children are younger than 14, the parents are liable and liability insurance usually pays out.
  • In case of damage to the property of persons who are on the same policy, such as father and mother.
