How can I renew my driving licence?

All new driver's licenses issued are valid for a period of 10 years.
This means that a driver's license must be renewed every 10 years.
For those aged 70 or older and those with a C or D driver's license, the validity of the license is 5 years. This is due to medical reasons. Because of medical reasons, or for persons between the ages of 65 and 70, a driver's license may be valid for less than 10 years.

Renewing driving licence

This is how you can renew your driver's license:

  1. Make an appointment at the municipality where you are registered. You can easily schedule an appointment to renew your driver's license online through the municipality's website.
  2. To renew your driver's license, bring the following documents to your appointment: identification, color passport photo and your current Dutch driver's license.
  3. Pay for your new driver's license when you apply (i.e., not when you pick it up).
  4. Pick up your new driver's license after a few working days. In most cases the application will tell you when you can pick up your license. In some municipalities, you will be notified by SMS when your driver's license is ready.

If you want your driver's license faster, you can choose the rush procedure. If you choose this, you will pay the extra cost for an urgent procedure and the driver's license will be ready the next working day. This is only the case when the application is submitted before 2:30 p.m.

What does it cost to renew a driving licence?

The cost of renewing a driver's license varies by municipality. The price of a driver's license is determined by the municipality and depends on several factors such as: the size of the municipality, the opening hours and the number of issue counters. If you want to know the exact cost of your new driver's license, check with the municipality where you live.

Product Average cost in 2022
Issue/new/renewal of driving licence €40,-
Additional costs in case of loss €21,-
Additional costs for urgent applications €30,-
Medical certificate €25,-

If you want to know if your license is about to be renewed, look on the license itself under "Valid until". You will receive a letter from RDW several months before your license expires. This will tell you exactly what you need to do and before which date. In some cases you may not receive a letter. It is therefore important that you keep track of when your license expires.

The driving license model changed in 2014. Since Nov. 14, 2014, the RDW has issued a driving license with a chip and a new design. The new driving license has embossing in certain places, a striking transparent round window and a hologram that changes color when you tilt the license. The chip that the new driver's license contains cannot be seen from the outside. This chip contains the same data as the driver's license itself. The chip is secured against remote reading. In the future, thanks to the chip, investigative authorities will be able to read the driver's license more quickly and flawlessly during checks.

Renewing driving licence 65+

To renew your driver's license as a 65+ person, different rules apply than if you have not yet reached this age. In many cases, your driver's license is not valid for 10 years.
Are you between the ages of 65 and 70 and want to renew your driver's license? Then until you reach the age of 75 you can renew your driver's license according to the usual procedure. If your driver's license expires when you are between the ages of 70 and 75, you will get a driver's license for a maximum of 5 years. This means that if your license expires at age 73 you will get a license that you can use until age 78, without a medical examination.

From the age of 75, you must undergo a medical examination when renewing your driver's license. In addition, you must complete a health statement when you apply. This will be used to determine whether your license will be renewed. If these tests have a positive outcome, your driver's license will be renewed for up to 5 years.

Renewing driving licence: how long does it take?

On average, renewing a driver's license takes about five business days. In many municipalities, it is also possible to make an urgent application. However, this varies by municipality. Inquire about this with the municipality where you live or check their website.

Applying to renew your driver's license when you are 75 years old or older takes considerably longer. This is due to the medical examination you must undergo. The processing at the CBR of the certificate of fitness can take up to 4 months. If you are referred by the CBR to a medical specialist, you should also expect long waiting times.
It is therefore advisable to start this procedure on time.

Driving licence lost or stolen

Have you lost your driver's license or has it been stolen? Then it is important that you report it to the municipality immediately. This can be done at the department of Civil Affairs/Public Affairs. This is also important when you have lost your driver's license abroad. In order to identify yourself at the municipality, you need a valid identity document.

Digitally renew your driver's license

Do you need to renew your driver's license and do you live in 1 of the municipalities participating in the Digital Driving License Trial?
Then, under certain conditions, you can apply for the renewal of your driving license digitally at the RDW.
You can find the conditions and explanation for applying for renewal of a Dutch driving license online here.

The participating municipalities are: Arnhem, Den Bosch, Alblasserdam, Drechtsteden (Sliedrecht, Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, Papendrecht, Zwijndrecht, Dordrecht and Hardinxveld-Giessendam), Eindhoven, Rotterdam and Utrecht.
In the coming months, the number of municipalities where online application for driving license renewal is possible will increase.

Your old driver's license

All (old) driver's licenses remain valid until the date listed on the license. Have you reported your driver's license missing and find it again? Then you can turn in the driving license to the municipality. If you filled out a declaration at the town hall, the old driving license will be declared invalid. This declaration cannot be reversed.

Insuring a vehicle without a driving licence

Not all insurers can insure your vehicle when you have no driver's license (temporarily). However, it is possible to get car insurance without a driver's license, for example. Alpina cooperates with insurers who have options to insure when you do not (yet) have a driving license.

It is not only possible to get car insurance without a driver's license. You can also insure a moped without a license.
By the way, this is also possible with a scooter.
