Single day license plate insurance

When you have bought a car abroad and want to import it into the Netherlands, the car must undergo an inspection at one of the RDW inspection stations. You can have your car transported on a trailer or car ambulance or you can drive your car to the inspection station yourself.

If you transport your car to an inspection station yourself, you need to apply for a free one-day registration certificate from the RDW at the time you make an appointment for the inspection examination. This application may take a few days. Once you have received the one-day registration certificate (black letters on a white plate), you must mount it on the car and drive to the inspection station with it.

Although a one-day license plate is only for one day, you must insure it. This is because without car insurance you are not allowed to drive your car on public roads, even if it is only to an RDW inspection station. That is why there is a special one-day license plate insurance. You pay a one-time premium so that your car is insured on a specific day. Currently, it is not possible to apply for a one-day registration plate insurance for importing a car from Germany. In the Netherlands, it is not possible to take out regular car insurance as long as the car has not officially been imported. You must first move the car to the Netherlands before you can take out insurance here. This is because in the Netherlands it is not possible to insure a car with a foreign license plate.

In foreign countries, a temporary solution can be found in the form of an export licence plate. In any case, make sure that the car is properly insured before bringing it to the Netherlands.

This is how you apply for a one-day license plate at the RDW:

1. Request a free one-day registration certificate when making your inspection appointment at the RDW
2. You will then receive your one-day license plate via a link
3. Get this one-day license plate on license plates on your car. You may also make the license plate yourself by writing the license plate with black marker on white cardboard. The license plates must be legible even in bad weather.
4. On the day of the inspection, you may drive the one-day license plate to the inspection station and back. However, the car must be safe to drive.

Applying for a one-day license plate goes through the RDW. You can apply for the one-day license plate when making your inspection appointment. Via a link you will then receive the one-day registration certificate. With this license plate you can drive back and forth to the inspection station on the day of the inspection. The RDW does have a number of conditions attached to the one-day registration. For example, it is only valid on the day of the inspection, it is only valid in the Netherlands and can only be applied for when making an inspection appointment. Without an inspection appointment, you cannot apply for a one-day registration plate.

Of course, insurance for a one-day registration plate is only valid for one day. With this single day license plate insurance you can drive your car to and from an RDW inspection station for your inspection appointment. Once your car has been inspected and has a Dutch license plate, you can take out a regular car insurance. The insurance is only valid in the Netherlands.
