Is absence insurance mandatory?

Taking out absence insurance is not mandatory. As an employer, you decide whether or not to take out absenteeism insurance. With absence insurance, you are insured for the costs when your employees fall ill. That can be nice, because a sick employee brings a lot of costs with it. As an employer, you are obliged to continue paying the wages of a sick employee for two years. On Alpina.nl we explain the costs involved in a sick employee and why taking out absenteeism insurance may be wise.

Not compulsory, but sensible

Although it is not compulsory to take out absenteeism insurance, it is wise to consider it. With absenteeism insurance, you protect yourself and your company against the financial risks that come with a sick employee. If your employee is ill for a long time, this often leads to high costs. Are you still hesitating about taking out absenteeism insurance? Take a good look at the financial capacity of your company. Suppose you have several long-term sick employees, can you absorb the absenteeism costs yourself? By mapping the risks of absenteeism, you can make a good consideration.

Sick employee costs

Research shows that a long-term sick employee costs more than one and a half times as much as most organisations think. When an employee is sick, you have to deal with different cost items. As an employer, you are obliged to continue paying the wages of your employee for two years. We call this the obligation to pay wages. Legally, an employee receives at least 70% of his/her gross salary. If your company has signed a CAO, this may differ. Many CLA's stipulate that the sick employee receives 100% of the gross salary in thefirst year and 70% in thesecond year.

In addition, you will have to deal with other costs, such as costs for absence guidance and replacement staff, costs due to lost sales and costs when the employee is reintegrated. The Central Planning Bureau has made an example of the cost items per day for a sick employee. This is based on an average annual income in the Netherlands of €36,500.

Source: Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis
Cost per day
Continued payment of wages €153
Cost of replacement staff €146
Loss of production €43
Occupational health and safety service costs €60
Leave of absence €7,50
Total cost €410
