Road tax calculation: Everything you need to know

Car owners must pay road tax each year for their vehicle. The amount depends on several factors, including the type of vehicle and CO2 emissions. In this article, we discuss everything you need to know about road tax calculation.

All about road tax

What is covered by car taxes?

Car tax can be seen as a kind of umbrella form of tax, of which road tax is also a part. You pay road tax, as stated earlier, to give the Dutch government room to keep the roads in good condition. You also have to pay tax for the purchase of a motor vehicle; the passenger car and motorcycle tax (bpm). You also pay excise duties on the use of the car. The government earns these excise taxes through the price of fuel. Each year, the government sets these excise taxes, which can vary by fuel.

If you own a service car and also use it for private purposes, then you have to pay car tax for it as well. The basic reason why tax must be paid is that private use of the car is considered a source of income. What has to be done in this case is that you have to add to your taxable income on an annual basis a certain number of percentage of the list price.

How is road tax calculated?

Road tax is calculated based on the vehicle's CO2 emissions. The higher the emissions, the higher the road tax amount. In addition, the type of vehicle also plays a role. For example, electric cars and hybrid cars are usually cheaper in road tax than gasoline or diesel cars.

How to calculate road tax by license plate number?

The official name for road tax is motor vehicle tax, abbreviated as MRB. When a motor vehicle is registered in your name, you pay this tax. The rate you are required to pay varies by vehicle. It depends, among other things, on the fuel and weight of the vehicle. From the date the license plate is in your name, you pay a certain amount of road tax per month or per quarter.

You can calculate road tax using the license plate number. On this website you can enter the license plate number and calculate the road tax completely free of charge. The amount differs per province. You will then also get, per province, an overview of the tax rate per quarter and per year. It makes no difference in rate whether you pay per year or per quarter.

What are the conditions for exemption?

If you do not get an automatic exemption, you can apply for an exemption online with the Internal Revenue Service.

Frequently asked questions about road tax

Do I have to pay road tax for a vintage car?

When calculating road tax for vintage cars, you may not have to pay any road tax at all. For vintage cars 40 years or older, for example, you don't have to pay road tax. This is because oldtimer owners often do not drive the oldtimer very much. All oldtimers whose first registration is at least 40 years ago are automatically exempt. If you use the oldtimer for business purposes, the exemption expires.

The age at which vintage cars are exempt from road tax changed from 25 to 40 years in 2014. Oldtimer owners who initially received exemption then suddenly had to pay road tax again. For these people, an oldtimer regulation was created, the transitional regulation. All oldtimers that run on gasoline, are not used commercially and were put into service between January 1, 1978 and January 1, 1988, can benefit from the transitional scheme. As a result, oldtimer owners pay a lot less road tax than the regular amount.

What is it the difference between motor vehicle tax and road tax?

Motor vehicle tax is an official term established by law. The term motor vehicle tax is also known as road tax. The tax authorities use the term motor vehicle tax exclusively. It is important not to get confused by these two terms because they mean exactly the same thing.

Is the RDW responsible for collecting road tax?

The National Road Administration(RDW) is mainly responsible for registering vehicles and assigning license plates. The RDW is also the pointed authority you need to go to for checking car data. Would you like us to calculate your road tax? Then we collect your data from the RDW by means of the license plate number.

In case you are not going to use your car for a longer period of time, you can have the license plate temporarily suspended at the RDW. Because of the suspension you do not have to pay road tax. Also, you can stop your car insurance and you will no longer have to pay road tax. It is worth mentioning that the RDW is not responsible for collecting road tax.

How can I suspend the road tax?

If you have sold the car, this also means that you do not have to pay road tax for that car. Because the car is no longer in your name, the tax authorities also process this in the system and your road tax is also cancelled. If money is still deducted from your account by the tax authorities, it will be refunded. But if all is well, the synchronization between the RDW and the tax authorities runs smoothly, and you can suffice with a notification to the RDW.

When do you get road tax exemption?

Everyone who owns a motor vehicle must pay road tax. However, there is an exception to this rule. The motor vehicles for which you can be exempted from paying road tax belong to the so-called classic cars, where its commissioning dates back at least 40 years.

Fully electric cars or cars with hydrogen combustion engines, are also among the motor vehicles for which there is no road tax to pay. This rule applies through 2024. For plug-in hybrid cars, road tax may be met at half the price. Other motor vehicles for which there is no road tax to be paid include:

  • police and fire department motor vehicles;
  • ambulances and animal ambulances;
  • hearses;
  • garbage trucks, street sweepers and gully cleaners;
  • motor vehicles used for road construction and maintenance.

Do you own a car that claims exemption from road tax? Then you can request this through a request to the tax authorities. To do so, you must fill out the form Request for exemption from road tax.

How can you cut back on road taxes?

Want to cut back on paying road tax? When buying a car, this is certainly possible. As stated earlier, the amount paid in road tax varies by car. The whole boils down to this: the heavier the car, the higher the amount you will have to pay in road tax. So do you choose a car with less weight? Then you will also pay much less in road tax.

As a result, the savings on road tax can amount to hundreds of euros. The type of fuel consumption also influences the amount of road tax you have to pay. It is good to know that a gasoline car pays less road tax than a diesel car. If you do not wish to pay any road tax at all, you can purchase a fully electric car. Fully electric cars are exempt from paying road tax until 2024.

Are you still in the dark about which type of car you would like to purchase? If so, you can calculate in advance the road taxes for the different car models and choose which type of car you will pay the least in road taxes. In addition, you could also calculate the cost of insurance for the different types of cars.

What are the rates in 2023?

Road tax rates are subject to change. This is due to the annual inflation correction made by the government. Because in the Netherlands the provinces have the freedom to set the opcent rates themselves, the road tax rate also varies by province. The provinces of Flevoland, Gelderland, Groningen, North Brabant and Utrecht face an increase in the opcent rate in 2023. For an all-electric car, you are waived from paying road tax in 2023, as it was last year, and this continues through 2024. In 2023, road tax rates will be changed again.
