What should I do if I haven't received a release certificate?

With the indemnification certificate, you can prove that a license plate is no longer in your name and therefore you no longer have to meet the vehicle obligations. Therefore, it is important that you keep the indemnity certificate well. When you sell your car, you get the indemnity certificate when you transfer the license plate. Often the transfer is done by the buyer of the car. The buyer must then send the release certificate to you. Unfortunately, this is not always done carefully. The release certificate may get lost or not sent at all. Therefore, make sure you always receive the release certificate. We explain it to you.

Receive a certificate of release from custody

From whom do I receive the receipt?

You receive the indemnification certificate during the registration process. You can do this at a license plate counter, RDW desk, RDW inspection station or PostNL location. You will then receive the indemnification certificate from the employee on location. If the buyer takes care of the registration, it is important that you make clear arrangements about handing over the release certificate. After all, without a release certificate you cannot prove that you are no longer liable for the car and its obligations.

You can also transfer the license plate online. You will then receive the release certificate via email. If you receive the indemnification certificate via e-mail, it is important that you save it immediately and print it, if necessary, to ensure that you do not accidentally lose the file.

How can I get a new certificate of release for free?

The RDW issues a disclaimer certificate only once. If you have not received a release certificate, you cannot apply for a new one, but you can obtain an extract of your personal data in the RDW vehicle registration register. This is all your registered personal and vehicle data from the past 9 years. It therefore also states when a registration has been transferred.

You can request the excerpt in writing or online. If you request the excerpt in writing, please note that there is a processing time of 9 working days. You can also request the excerpt online, then you can view the data immediately. The cost of an extract is €4.50. You pay these costs via IDEAL or bank transfer.
