Driving without a valid driving licence, am I still insured?
Research by the NOS on 19 October 2018 shows that thousands of people are driving around without a valid driving licence. Of these people, the driving licence has been declared invalid, but they have not subsequently sent this driving licence to the CBR. Driving without a valid driving licence can have major consequences.
Driving without a valid driving licence
Since 2016, the CBR has already found more than 5,000 people to have invalid driving licences. In the past 3 years, the police have stopped almost 3000 people who have an invalid driving licence. Driving licences are, for example, invalidated for elderly people who are no longer able to drive or for people who have been caught with too much alcohol behind the wheel. Holding an invalidated driving licence can result in a fine of 240 Euros. Driving with an invalid driving licence can result in a fine of up to EUR 8,300 and a prison sentence of up to three months.
Will the damage be compensated after an accident?
Driving without a valid driving licence can result in more than just a fine. When an accident is caused by someone without a valid driving licence, insurance companies may decide not to compensate the own damage suffered. However, they will often compensate the other party for any material or personal damage. The insurance company then tries to recover these damages from the person who caused the accident. This amount can be high, especially when there is personal injury or someone becomes disabled because of you. This also applies when you are on the road with an expired driving licence.
