Need a new registration code urgently: what should I do?
If you are going to sell your car or maybe you have already sold it, you will need the registration code to transfer the car to the new owner's name. If the car is already sold, you obviously want to register it as soon as possible. Then it is annoying if you cannot find the registration code. When do I actually need the registration code?
You need the registration code to prove that you are actually the owner of the car. This is necessary if you sell the car, have it scrapped, suspended, exported, or trade it in, for example. The registration code consists of 9 digits. The first 4 digits are on the registration certificate you receive when the car is put into your name. The last 5 digits are in the letter you receive from the RDW together with your registration card.
Where can I urgently request a new registration code?
You can apply for a new registration code via the RDW website. You do not need to do an 'urgent notification', because the new code can be downloaded immediately when you log in with your DigiD. You follow the next steps:
- Log in via the 'Instant download registration code' button on the RDW website. You can then log in with your DigiD.
- Select the vehicle for which you want to request a new code.
- Pay the fee via iDeal.
- You will then receive 2 emails from the RDW. The second e-mail contains the link to the new registration code.
- Download the new code and save it properly. The code will remain accessible through the link for 40 days.
How much does a new registration code cost?
A new registration code costs €1 at the RDW. Be careful though, because there are some misleading websites around where you can also apply for a new registration code, but for a much higher rate. Therefore, arrange it directly through the RDW, so you do not pay too much.
Can I urgently request a new registration code if I do not have DigiD?
If you do not have DigiD, it will take a little longer before you receive the registration code. This is because it will then be sent to you by mail. You can take the following delivery time:
