Help, I have lost my registration code
Where you used to have the registration certificate (part II or copy part III), nowadays you have the registration code. This is a unique 9-digit code that you need if you want to sell, transfer, suspend, scrap, export or trade in the car. You are not the only one to have lost your registration code: according to the RDW, every year some 200,000 new registration codes are requested. This may be because the registration certificate has been lost, or if the letter containing the second part of the code can no longer be found. The code also tends to get lost when the vehicle changes owners. In that case, you will have to apply for a new registration code.
Help, I have lost my registration card
If you are no longer in possession of the registration card, for example because you have lost it or it has been stolen, you should apply to the RDW for a new card. RDW sends this together with a new registration code to the owner/applicant. The registration card then has the same registration number but a different one. The costs for this are € 31.50.
New registration code via RDW
The registration code consists of 2 parts that you have to put together yourself. The first part is on the registration certificate. This is what you will receive when the license plate is transferred to your name. The first part consists of the first 4 digits of the registration code The second part is in the letter that you receive from the RDW, together with your registration card. This is sent by post a few days after the registration. The second part consists of the last 5 digits of the code. Normally, you therefore have to wait before you have the complete code. However, if you request a new registration code from RDW, you can download it immediately.
Requesting a new registration code urgently
When you are about to sell your car, you want to have the new registration code as soon as possible. Fortunately, you don't have to make an 'urgent notification' and pay extra, because you can download the new registration code immediately when you log in with your DigiD. To do so, follow the next steps:
- Log in via the button 'Download registration code immediately' on the RDW website. You can then log in with your DigiD.
- Select the vehicle for which you want to request a new code
- Pay the costs via iDeal
- You will then receive 2 e-mails from RDW. The second e-mail contains the link to the new registration code
- Download the new code and save it. The code will remain available for 40 days via the link
