How can I apply for a registration code?

Have you lost your registration code and want to request a new one? That is possible and quite easy. Below we explain how you can request a new code. But first we explain what a registration code actually is.

What exactly is a registration code?

You used to have the transfer certificate (part II or copy part III). However, this no longer exists. Nowadays, a registration card comes with a unique 9-digit code: this is called the registration code. You will need the registration code if you transfer the vehicle to another owner's name, if you request a suspension of the registration, if you have the registration cancelled at the registration desk, or if you scrap the vehicle.

registration code example

Your registration code is supposed to be kept safe. Yet it happens quite often that it gets lost. For example, if a vehicle changes hands, if the registration certificate is lost, or if the letter containing part of the code can no longer be found. If you have lost the registration code, fortunately you can always request a new code from the RDW.

I lost my registration code. What now?

Where you used to have the registration certificate (part II or copy part III), these days you have the registration code. This is a unique 9-digit code that you need if you want to sell, transfer, suspend, scrap, export or trade in your car. The registration code consists of 2 parts that you have to put together yourself. The first part is on the registration certificate you receive once the car's registration has been transferred to your name. This part consists of the first 4 digits of the registration code. The second part is in the letter you receive from the RDW, together with the registration card. This is sent by mail a few days after the registration. The second part consists of the last 5 digits of the code.

How can you request a registration code from the RDW?

To apply for a new registration code, go to "Lost your car registration code" on the RDW website. Here you can log in with your DigiD. Then select the vehicle for which you want to request a new code. The cost for a new code is €1.10 (January 2023), you can pay this via iDeal. Then you will immediately receive an e-mail from RDW with a link to your new registration code. Download this immediately and save it properly. The link to the code remains accessible for 40 days.

How can I apply for a registration code without DigiD?

Don't have a DigiD? Then you can apply for a DigiD (that takes about 3 working days) or you can apply for the new registration code without DigiD. In that case, you will not receive the new code by e-mail, but by mail. Make sure you have the vehicle identification number to hand, this is on the back of the registration certificate. To request a registration code without DigiD you can follow the following steps:

  1. Go to 'Apply for registration code'. Choose 'Apply for registration code only'.
  2. Pay the costs via iDeal
  3. You will then receive the code by mail at the address of the car owner registered with the municipality
Request In the house
Monday to Friday before 8 p.m. Within 3 working days
Monday to Thursday after 8 p.m. Within 4 working days

After receiving the new registration code, the old code is no longer valid. The registration number does remain the same. Are you applying for the new code for someone else? Then you can follow the same steps.

Frequently asked questions regarding the registration code

How do I get a registration code?

The registration code consists of 2 parts. You combine the two parts of the code yourself. You receive the first part of the registration code when you have the car registered in your name. The first part of the code is on the certificate of registration that you receive as soon as the registration has been transferred to your name. Part 1 of the code consists of the first 4 digits of the registration code.

The second part of the registration code can be found in the letter you receive from the RDW, together with the registration card. This is sent by mail a few days after the registration. The letter contains the last 5 digits of the code. It is important that you keep the registration code. On the letter you receive there are 9 boxes. The last 5 boxes contain the second part of the registration code. You can also fill in the first 4 digits here and keep the letter well.
