How can I cancel my suspension with the RDW?
If you want to use your car again before the suspension period ends , you can lift the suspension earlier. When you lift the suspension, it is terminated immediately. It is not possible to lift the suspension for a date in the future. If you end the suspension before the suspension period expires, you will not receive a refund. However, lifting the suspension is free of charge. You can lift the suspension at the RDW. This can be done both online and at the counter. Lift suspension online
The easiest way is to lift the suspension online. This can be done 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Go to "Cancel suspension car" and log in with your DigiD.
- Indicate which suspension you want to end.
- You will then receive two emails from the RDW. Only upon receipt of the second e-mail is the suspension immediately lifted. This e-mail also includes a confirmation and an end date of the suspension.
Your registration card (credit card-sized registration certificate) remains valid after the expiration of the suspension. You will not receive a new registration certificate. On some paper registration certificates (when the car was suspended before 1-1-2014) the suspension is mentioned. You will then receive a new registration card and registration code within 5 business days. If you have a paper registration certificate without mention of the suspension, it remains valid.
Lift suspension at a counter
If you prefer to suspend the car at a counter, you can follow the following steps:
- Go to a license plate counter, RDW counter or RDW inspection station.
- Bring the registration certificate and the transfer certificate OR the registration card and the registration code. Don't forget a valid ID as well.
- A staff member immediately puts an end to the suspension.
- You will receive a paper receipt with the end date of the suspension.
If you have a registration card, your suspension certificate will show the first 4 digits of your new registration code. Within 5 days you will receive a letter from RDW with the last 5 digits of the registration code. Your registration card remains valid. If you have a paper vehicle registration certificate that mentions the suspension, you will also receive a new credit card-sized registration certificate along with the last 5 digits of the registration code. A paper registration certificate without mention of the suspension remains valid.
What does it cost to lift a suspension?
Lifting a suspension is free of charge. However, there is a minimum suspension period of 1 month. If you end the suspension of your car within 1 month after the start of the suspension, you still have to pay motor vehicle taxes for the period during which the license plate was suspended. You will pay this motor vehicle tax for the suspension period via an after-tax bill. When the suspension is lifted, you must immediately resume all vehicle obligations. So before you take the car on the road, it must have a valid MOT. Also, the vehicle must have at least third-party insurance.
