Transferring car insurance after death

After the death, the next of kin have five weeks to decide what to do with the car. After this period, the car has to be transferred to the name of the new owner, for example one of the next of kin. Not only the registration number has to be transferred, but also the car insurance. When the car is sold to someone else, it is just a matter of changing the registration to the name of the buyer and ending the car insurance. The transfer to another name changes a lot for the car insurance. For example, the claim-free years of the deceased are lost, unless the car is transferred to the name of the partner. The premium for the car insurance might change, because the insurer will adjust the premium to the new owner. Therefore it is always wise to check if you are not better off with another insurer.

Transferring car insurance to a name other than that of the car

It is almost never possible to transfer a car insurance to another name just like that. In principle, car insurance has to be taken out in the name of the licence plate holder. The only exception are partners who live at the same address.

Partner

Maybe you used to drive the car most of the time, but now it is your partner. With most insurers it is possible to insure the car in your partner's name, if your partner is the regular driver of the car. Also if you are the owner of the car. You must be registered at the same address. Remember that you do not build up claim-free years yourself if the car insurance is in your partner's name.

Children

Young drivers pay a lot more for their car insurance than older drivers. Therefore, your child will pay more for car insurance than you. However, you are not allowed to transfer your child 's car insurance to your own name. However, you can add your child as a regular driver to your own car insurance policy. The insurance premium will still go up in that case.
