What does an MOT retest involve?

When a vehicle is rejected during the APK inspection, the inspection station issues an inspection report indicating on which points the vehicle does not comply with the requirements of the APK inspection. The owner of the vehicle is responsible for remedying the defects before the APK re-inspection can take place.

Re-inspection APK is a new inspection

The APK re-inspection is seen by the RDW as a complete new inspection. It is therefore possible that at a re-inspection they will find other issues. Especially if you go to a different inspection station or get a different inspector at the re-inspection of the vehicle. So it is quite possible that at a re-inspection the vehicle may still...or again...be rejected on other points.

If you find that the vehicle has been wrongly rejected and you cannot resolve the issue with the MOT authority, you can request a re-inspection at the RDW. You will then need an inspection report if you wish to appeal against the result of the inspection.

When to retest for the MOT

Is your car rejected? In the MOT inspection report you receive, you can see the points for which the car has been rejected. You must first have these defects repaired before a re-inspection of the APK can take place. If the car is APK rejected and the expiration date has passed, you have 2 months to repair the car. Please note that during those 2 months, you are not allowed to drive the car except when you are on your way to the garage for the MOT re-inspection. In that case, you must be able to prove that you have an appointment at the garage. If the car is not approved after 2 months, you will automatically receive a fine from the RDW. If you want to avoid a fine, you can also temporarily suspend the car. The APK obligation then expires for the duration of the suspension. As soon as the suspension expires, you will have the APK obligation again.

Re-inspection MOT

What does an MOT retest cost?

Since a re-inspection of the MOT is a completely new inspection, you just pay (the same) cost again for a re-inspection. However, some garages offer a free re-inspection if you have the repairs done with them. Often this re-inspection must then take place within two weeks.

In addition to the cost of the re-inspection, you also have repair costs, of course. These depend on the rejection points. When a car is MOT inspected, the MOT inspector looks at a lot of items, such as the brakes, belts tires and lights of the car. Of course, some parts are more expensive to repair than others.

Car retest

You do need to consider whether the car is worth a re-inspection. Are there so many repair points that repairing it no longer makes sense? Then you can consider trading in the car, selling it or taking it to the junkyard. There is always someone who enjoys working on a car and therefore doesn't mind doing the necessary repairs. Or a garage that can put the car's parts to good use. There are plenty of options if you don't want to have a car retested.

If you do not have your car repaired, you can continue to use it until the expiration date of the MOT. After the expiration date has passed, the car is no longer allowed on the road.
