Home Car Insurance Child living at home

Is a child living at home also insured?

A child living at home is also insured under your car insurance and can therefore drive your car without any problems (provided he or she has a driving licence, of course). You do not have to report this to your insurer in advance if your child occasionally drives your car. Should he or she cause any car damage, this is covered by your car insurance. With some insurers, a (higher) excess may apply for drivers under 25 years of age.

Does your child drive the car regularly, perhaps more often than you? Then you must report this to your insurer. Your child will be added to the policy as a regular driver. The insurer wants to know this, because they can adjust the premium and conditions of the insurance accordingly. Because a young person often pays a higher premium, there are many parents who decide to conceal the fact that their child regularly drives the car. However, by withholding this information you are committing insurance fraud and this can have very unpleasant consequences. So don't forget to register a resident child as a regular driver with your car insurance.

When should resident children take out their own car insurance?

As the owner of a car, you are legally obliged to take out car insurance. This applies from the moment the licence plate is registered in your name. A child living at home has to take out a car insurance when the car has a license plate in his/her name. Are your children living at home under 18? Then they are not yet allowed by law to have a car registration in their name. At that moment they are not obliged to take out their own car insurance. Children who live with you and are 17 years old and have a driving licence, have other options for car insurance.

Can you insure a car for resident children?

The premium for car insurance for young people under 24 is very high. People sometimes try to avoid high premiums by putting the car in their parents' name and insuring it. However, as a parent you are not allowed to take out a car insurance for your child. Some insurers do allow this, but there are strict conditions attached. For example, your child has to live with you and you have to report that he or she drives the car most of the time. However, your child will not build up any claim-free years.

Why insuring a car for resident children is not wise

Young drivers often pay a much higher premium. That is why many parents want to take out a car insurance for their child. However, it is not wise to insure a car for your child in your own name, because your son or daughter will then not build up any claim-free years. The more claim-free years they build up early on, the lower the premium will be.
