Car insurance limited casco or all risk: what is the difference?
When comparing car insurance, it is important to know what cover you are choosing. You have to have at least a WA-coverage. With this coverage you insure yourself for damages you cause to others. If you want a more extensive coverage you can choose for a limited casco or an all risk car insurance. With a limited casco you are insured for hail or fire damage for example. The most extensive car insurance you can choose is the all risk cover. Of course this is also the most expensive.
Car insurance limited casco or all risk
The choice you make for a car insurance with an all risk or limited casco cover depends on several factors. All risk is the most expensive car insurance. This coverage is the most extensive. Therefore the premium is also higher because the insurer runs the most risks here. Price will therefore be an important consideration when choosing cover. In addition, the age of the car is important. In general you will not insure a somewhat older car, because it is simply not worth it anymore.

When should you opt for third-party cover?
The third-party cover is the cheapest, but also the most minimal cover. In the Netherlands, as a car owner, you are obliged to take out at least a third-party insurance (WA) for your car. With a WA insurance you are only insured for damage to third parties. Therefore, you cannot claim damage to your own car with the car insurance. Due to the limited coverage, this car insurance is more suitable for somewhat older cars that have a lower current value.
When do you opt for WA-restricted hull coverage?
If you think the WA-coverage is too minimal, you can choose a WA limited casco cover. This coverage is a middle ground between the WA-coverage and the all risk car insurance. The premium is a little bit higher than the WA-coverage, but then you are more broadly insured. The limited casco part compensates for damages caused by a number of causes listed in the policy conditions. The exact coverage can differ per insurer, but in general it amounts to a compensation for the following causes:
- Collision with stray animals
- Theft and damage due to attempted theft
- Hail and storm damage
- Lightning damage
- Fire and explosion
- Window breakage
When to choose all-risk cover (WA-casco)?
The all-risk cover is the most comprehensive car insurance. You will also be compensated for damage to your own car when you cause an accident. The premium for an all-risk insurance is therefore higher than for a limited casco coverage. This coverage is standard for new cars up to about 6 years old. However, also for cars older than 6 years it can be advisable to take out an all-risk car insurance instead of limited casco coverage. Nowadays cars easily last 15 years. Therefore a car of 8 years old can still have a high current value. Whether you choose limited hull or all-risk coverage will therefore depend on the value of your car. Furthermore, it is up to you what you want to pay monthly in premiums. By comparing your car insurances, you can make a good choice.
