Additional car insurance: what additional coverages are there?

In addition to the car insurance you can choose for additional insurances. Which ones can you choose and what is the function? Not all supplements are always advisable. Double insurances should be avoided. Only take out additional cover when it really adds value to your car insurance.

Insure yourself and your passengers

In auto insurance, you insure liability for damage done with the car. Optionally, you can also insure damage to your own car. There are two additional insurances that can ease the financial suffering for you and your passengers in the event of an accident.

Accident insurance

An accident can cause serious injury or death. The accident passenger insurance provides a one-off payment in the event of personal injury. This is a payment in the event of permanent disability and death of the driver and/or passengers. You can partly determine the amount yourself. In case of invalidity the payment is not sufficient to cover the loss of income due to the invalidity. Most policies provide a payment of tens of thousands to about one hundred thousand euros. In case of death, a lower amount is insured. In principle, you can decide for yourself how many persons you want to insure.

How many persons are insured?

In principle, you can decide for yourself how many people you want to insure. You can insure as many passengers as there are seat belts in the vehicle. Normally, four passengers are insured on the accident or passenger indemnity insurance.

Accident insurance: too few people, what to do?

If you have 4 persons insured on an accident passenger insurance, but there are 5 persons in a vehicle in an accident, then the fifth person is automatically insured. The company will then pay less. It divides the payment that would be given to 4 persons over 5 persons. It is therefore advisable to indicate the correct number of persons.

Damage insurance for passengers

This insurance is more expensive than the accident passenger insurance, but the coverage is also much broader. In addition to payment for personal injury, this insurance pays out for material damage resulting from an accident. For example, there is coverage for damage to the belongings of passengers. As far as personal injury is concerned, the passenger indemnity insurance is also much broader. Both the driver and the passengers are paid for the actual damage suffered. Suppose a passenger becomes disabled due to a car accident. The passenger indemnity insurance provides a payment whereby the injured party is fully compensated. In the case of permanent disability, this can amount to hundreds of thousands of euros.

No-claims protection

With the no-claims protection you can protect the discount built up in the car insurance. When you choose this additional insurance, you can claim a loss on the car insurance once without affecting the accumulated discount. The claim on the insurance does reduce the number of claim-free years, but the discount is artificially maintained. Are you switching to another insurer? Then the advantage is cancelled. The new insurer will take the actual claim-free years into account.

Protecting rights with additional insurance

You can also choose to protect your rights with an insurance that provides legal assistance. This additional insurance is not recommended in all cases.

Roadside assistance

Roadside assistance after an accident is standard insured in your car insurance. More and more insurers want to go a step further by offering breakdown assistance as an addition to the car insurance. This coverage can be extended with roadside assistance abroad. Make sure you are not double insured for roadside assistance. For new cars there is often a similar service from the car brand.

Legal expenses insurance

In some situations, you have to submit your claim to the person who caused the damage. Normally, this is not necessary with the most extensive WA casco insurance. The insurer will already pay for the damage to your car. If your car has WA or WA limited casco insurance, it is not insured to recover your damage from the other party. For this you can take out a legal assistance insurance. After damage, the insurer will take care of recovering your damage.

Legal expenses insurance for motor vehicles

This insurance also ensures the recovery of damage from the person who caused it, but the coverage is broader than that of the legal expenses insurance. You can also call upon this insurance in case of a dispute with, for example, a car dealer or a disagreement with the garage about repair costs. You can even call upon this insurance for legal assistance for criminal prosecution following an accident. However, specific requirements may apply in order to take out legal expenses insurance for motor vehicles.
