What is an expungement statement?

Until the summer of 2014, a cancellation notice was often valid for 1 year from the date of issue. Since the summer of 2014, many companies have extended the validity of the cancellation certificate to 3 years. With the cancellation statement, you can prove claim-free years. After the period of validity of the termination declaration has expired, you can no longer claim discount for claim-free driving with a new insurer.

Especially older car owners who sometimes change their car insurance zihave had to deal with it: the cancellation statement. Younger drivers will not receive such a statement as a rule, unless it is for a moped or scooter insurance.

But what exactly is an annulment notice? It's a written document you receive from your insurer when you terminate your car insurance. It includes, the number of claim-free years you have accumulated with a motor vehicle. This statement is issued once after terminating the insurance and is your proof that you can present to a new insurer so that you can keep the accumulated claim-free years.

How do I request the royalty statement?

Never received an expulsion notice and lost it? You can try to request a new copy from your old insurer, but actually this is no longer necessary. The document has not been provided in most cases since 2007. At least not for cars and motorcycles anymore. It is provided when you cancel moped insurance or scooter insurance. Damage-free years for cars and motorcycles have been registered since 2007 in Roy-data, a database to which all insurance companies have access. If you take out a new car or motorcycle insurance policy with another insurer, the insurer will no longer need a termination statement, but can see for themselves in Roy-data how many claim-free years you have.

Cancellation notice: what about a leased car?

Have you had a lease car and are returning it? Then you can request a so-called lease statement from your lease company. This also contains the number of claim-free years. These claim-free years will in most cases be accepted by your new insurance company without any problems. Normally, a leasing company keeps tight records and these data are reliable.

It's different if you drove a company car. You can then request a statement from your employer with the number of claim-free years, but the maximum number of free years is always three years. Regardless of how long you actually drove claim-free. This is because insurance companies consider the registration of claims by an employer less reliable.

How long is a cancellation notice valid?

An expulsion certificate is never valid indefinitely. The standard validity period is 1 year. If you cancel your car insurance because you are getting rid of your car and are not going to drive a new car for the first few years, at some point the statement will no longer be valid and your claim-free years will expire. As of 2014, many insurance companies have increased the validity period from 1 year to 3 years. This does not apply to all companies, by the way. If you take out a new car insurance policy after a while, pay special attention to whether your new insurance company uses a validity period of 1 or 3 years. This can make the difference between keeping your claim-free years or starting to build up claim-free years again.

Duration royalty statement can it vary by insurer?

There are insurers who accept a new car insurance policy for a longer period than 1 year. In the overview below you can see which company goes back the furthest.

Claim-free years transferable since 1-1-2022

Since Jan. 1, 2022, claim-free years are transferable in some situations. Upon death, for example, they can be transferred to the surviving partner. Also for lease drivers and drivers who have lived abroad for years, it is now possible to transfer claim-free years. This way they do not lose their accumulated claim-free years. What is an expungement statement?

To cancel literally means to terminate or discontinue. An insurance policy can be cancelled by yourself or by an insurer. An expulsion statement is therefore a declaration of expulsion, or proof that the insurance has been terminated. In addition, an expulsion statement lists your accrued claim-free years. You need these to take out a new car insurance policy. You used to get this with a paper termination statement, but now insurers work with the digital system Roy Data. Your proof of termination and your accrued claim-free years are digitally registered, so every insurer can see this.
