What is a malus registration?

You get a malus registration if you have negative claim-free years on your car insurance. You have less than 0 claim-free years. Building up claim-free years gives you a discount on your car insurance. This is also called the no-claim discount. To determine the no-claim discount insurers use a bonus malus ladder. The more claim-free years you have, the higher the discount. Every year that you do not claim any damage from the insurer, you climb one step on the ladder. If you do make a claim, you fall on the bonus malus ladder. With each insurer you fall back 5 claim-free years for each claimed claim. This reduction is the same for each insurer. However, the discount or surcharge can differ.

If you claim more than one claim and thus fall on the bonus malus ladder, you do not receive a discount but pay a surcharge on the premium. This is called malus. This is the case, for example, when you claim more than one claim per insurance year.

Malus registration expired

As a rule, negative claim-free years remain for three years. The claim-free years must not have been used during the entire period. The same applies to positive claim-free years. When they are not linked to a car insurance, they usually expire after three years.

In order to cancel your malus registration and build up your claim-free years again, it is necessary to drive without claims. Unfortunately, this does not happen quickly. In case of damage you lose 5 claim-free years in one go. You then have to drive 5 years damage-free to make up for one claim.
