Where can I transfer a moped?

There are various places where you can transfer a moped, such as a vehicle registration office, a PostNL location, a RDW testing station or a RDW desk. During the transfer, the moped's registration number is put in the new owner's name. You can also transfer the moped online. This is done with the DigiD app. Read all about online registration of a moped here.

At the time of the transfer, you will receive a certificate of release from liability. This certificate of indemnity is for the seller of the moped. With the indemnification certificate, the seller can prove that the registration number of the sold moped is no longer in his or her name. The seller is then no longer liable for the obligations of the licence plate holder.

What does it cost to register a moped?

In 2020, the registration of a licence plate costs €10.40. You must pay these costs on the spot when you register the moped.

Step-by-step plan for transferring a moped

When transferring a moped, you can follow the following steps:

  1. Ask the seller of the moped for the necessary documents
  2. Bring these documents, along with a valid ID, with you to the venue
  3. Pay the fee of €10.40 for the transfer
  4. The employee will then transfer the vehicle to your name. You will then receive a registration report. This is written proof of the transaction.
  5. You will also receive the clearance certificate. You give the clearance certificate to the seller.
  6. From that moment on, you are liable for the obligations of a licence plate holder. For example, you have to take out moped insurance. You are legally obliged to take out at least a third-party insurance for your moped.
  7. You will receive the new registration card from RDW the same working day (if the registration was transferred before 16.00) or the next working day.
