What are the risks of driving without a licence plate?

If you ride around on a moped without a licence plate, you run the risk of being fined. You will also be fined if your registration plate has been stolen or lost. Driving around without a licence plate is simply not allowed. If you are caught, you will be fined €140. If the licence plate is damaged or difficult to read, you also risk a fine of €90.

Moreover, you cannot take out moped insurance without a licence plate. You are obliged to take out third-party liability insurance for your moped. If you drive around on an uninsured moped, you risk a fine. The fine is even higher: €370.

 

How can I apply for a licence plate?

Of course you want to avoid a fine if at all possible. It is therefore wise to apply for a registration number immediately if your moped does not have one yet. You can apply for the registration number via the RDW. Before you get a license plate, your moped must first be tested by the RDW.
