Driving a moped without a licence plate: is that allowed?

Driving a moped without a licence plate is prohibited

Nowadays, all mopeds have a standard registration number. If you buy an older moped from before 2007, there is a chance that the moped does not yet have a licence plate. In 2007, the registration requirement for mopeds was introduced. In that case, you have to apply for a licence plate yourself before you can ride the moped.
What are the risks of driving without a licence plate?
If you ride around on a moped without a licence plate, you run the risk of being fined. You will also be fined if your registration plate has been stolen or lost. Driving around without a licence plate is simply not allowed. If you are caught, you will be fined €140. If the licence plate is damaged or difficult to read, you also risk a fine of €90.
Moreover, you cannot take out moped insurance without a licence plate. You are obliged to take out third-party liability insurance for your moped. If you drive around on an uninsured moped, you risk a fine. The fine is even higher: €370.
How can I apply for a licence plate?
Of course you want to avoid a fine if at all possible. It is therefore wise to apply for a registration number immediately if your moped does not have one yet. You can apply for the registration number via the RDW. Before you get a license plate, your moped must first be tested by the RDW. Without a licence plate you are not allowed to drive your moped, but of course you have to drive it to the inspection location. That is why you can apply for a one-day registration plate. One working day later they send you a letter with the registration code. Once you have all the documents, all the vehicle requirements apply.
