What is the difference between a yellow and a blue licence plate?

The biggest difference between a moped with a yellow licence plate and a moped with a blue licence plate is the maximum speed. A moped with a blue licence plate has a maximum speed of 25 km per hour. In addition, the driver of a moped with a blue licence plate is not obliged to wear a helmet. Also, this driver usually rides on the bicycle path instead of the roadway. What is the same is that you need to have at least an AM driver's licence and that you are obliged to take out moped insurance.

How can I apply for a yellow licence plate?

You can apply for a yellow licence plate via the RDW. Before the RDW issues a licence plate, your moped must first be tested. This inspection checks whether the moped complies with the rules for driving on public roads and checks the technical condition of the moped. So make an appointment for the inspection first. Then you can apply for a one-day licence plate. With a one-day licence plate you can drive to the inspection station on the day of the inspection.

Within 5 working days after the inspection, you will receive the licence plate by post. One working day later, you will receive a letter with the registration code. As soon as the licence plate has been issued in your name, you must fulfil the obligations of a licence plate holder. You have to take out moped insurance and make sure that your moped has a yellow number plate. You must purchase this licence plate yourself from a licence plate manufacturer recognised by the RDW. Please note: the prices may vary from one manufacturer to another because they are allowed to set their own prices.
