What does a blue licence plate mean for a moped?

Everyone is familiar with a yellow license plate. It is yellow with a black border and black letters. But did you know that there are two types of license plates for a moped? In fact, there is also a blue license plate. What kind of license plate your moped has depends on the maximum speed of the vehicle. Some other rules do apply to a moped with blue license plates. How fast can you drive with a blue licence plate?

If you have a moped with a blue license plate, it has a maximum speed of 25 kilometers per hour. For example, an example of a moped with a blue license plate is a moped or moped scooter. On a moped or scooter, wearing a helmet is not mandatory. Of course, you can always choose to wear a helmet anyway, for added safety. To ride a moped with a blue license plate, you must be at least 16 years old and have a moped license (AM) or car license (B). Taking out insurance is mandatory. As with other motor vehicles, a moped with a blue license plate requires at least third-party insurance.

Difference between blue and yellow number plates

The main difference is in the maximum speed of the moped. A moped with a blue license plate has a maximum speed of 25 kilometers per hour, and a moped with a yellow license plate can go 45 kilometers per hour. Drivers of mopeds with yellow license plates are required to wear helmets, and since Jan. 1, 2023, so are drivers of blue license plates. In addition, a moped with a yellow license plate usually rides on the carriageway between cars in built-up areas (with exceptions), while a moped with a blue license plate rides on the bicycle path. What is the same, however, is that you must have at least an AM license and you are required to have moped insurance.

How can I apply for a blue licence plate?

You can apply through the RDW for a blue license plate for your moped. Your moped must first be inspected by the RDW. During this inspection, they check whether the moped complies with the rules for driving on public roads. They also check the technical condition of the moped. Without an inspection you will not get a new license plate. You can make an inspection appointment here. To take your moped to the inspection, you need a license plate. That is why you can apply for a one-day registration plate. With a single-day license plate you can drive to the inspection station on the day of the inspection.

After the inspection, you will receive the registration card by mail within 5 working days. One working day later you will receive a letter with the registration code. From that moment the license plate is in your name and you must fulfill all vehicle obligations. So you must have a license plate and take out moped insurance. You can buy a blue license plate from a license plate manufacturer approved by the RDW. Prices may vary because each manufacturer may set its own price.
