Moped license plate

Every vehicle must have a license plate before it can be driven on public roads. So this also applies to a moped. Since 2007, all new mopeds have had a license plate by default, because that is when the moped license plate was introduced. However, older mopeds do not have a license plate by default. If you have bought an older moped, you need to apply for a license plate yourself. On Alpina.nl you can read all about the moped license plate.

Moped licence plate lost

Sometimes a moped's licence plate is stolen or lost. In that case, you can purchase a new licence plate from a licence plate manufacturer recognised by the RDW. To do this, you must take the original vehicle registration certificate (Part IA) or the registration card. We cannot tell you in advance what a new number plate will cost; this is up to each manufacturer. It is therefore possible that you will pay more with one manufacturer than with another. You will then receive new number plates with a duplicate code from the manufacturer. The duplicate code is a number on the licence plate that indicates how often licence plates have been issued for the moped.

Moped license plate application

You can apply for a licence plate for your moped from the RDW. However, before they can issue you with a registration number, you will have to have your moped tested by the RDW. During the inspection they check whether the moped meets the rules for driving on public roads and they check the technical condition. To apply for a licence plate you can follow the next steps:

  1. First you have to make an appointment for the examination. You can do this at 'Make an appointment for an examination'.
  2. Of course, your moped has to pass the inspection, but you are not allowed to drive it on the public roads yet. You can apply for a one-day registration plate for this. You can do this at 'Apply for a one-day registration plate'. With a one-day registration number you may drive to the inspection station on the day of the inspection.
  3. After the inspection, RDW sends you a registration card by post within 5 working days. One working day later you will receive a letter with the registration code. From that moment on, all vehicle obligations apply, such as having a licence plate and third-party insurance.
  4. Finally, you buy the licence plate. You can do this with a licence plate manufacturer recognised by the RDW.

There are a number of conditions for applying for a licence plate. For example, you must be at least 16 years old and be registered in the Basic Registration of Persons. You must also appear in person at the inspection and carry valid identification.

License plate check moped

As soon as a licence plate is registered in your name, your personal details are recorded in the RDW's licence plate register. Data about the vehicle is also recorded. To find out these details, you can carry out a licence plate check. You can only request non-privacy-sensitive details about the moped. Your personal data cannot be retrieved by just anyone. A licence plate check is useful if you want to buy or sell a moped. It allows you to check the information given. You can do a license plate check here.

If you have entered the registration number of the moped, you will see a number of data, such as the type of vehicle, the make and the number of owners. You will also see, for example, when the MOT expires and when the moped was last registered. You can also see whether the vehicle is registered for third-party insurance.

Moped without a licence plate

In 2007, the registration plate for mopeds was introduced. This means that all mopeds from 2007 and later have a standard registration plate. Mopeds from before 2007 usually do not have a licence plate. If you get hold of an old moped, for example from a family member or a second-hand website, you will have to apply for a registration plate yourself. Before you take it on the road, don't forget to apply for a licence plate and look for moped insurance! It is compulsory to take out at least a third-party insurance for your moped.
