Scooter features

A scooter is a motorized two-wheeler with two small, wide wheels. Scooter is a collective term for all two-wheeled vehicles that fit this description, such as mopeds and mopeds. Thus, a moped or moped bicycle is the same as a scooter. The motorcycle or motorcycle also falls under the category of scooters. Therefore, these three two-wheeled vehicles are also referred to as motorcycles, mopeds or scooters.

All three variants of scooters have different features. For the motorcycle or motorcycle, you need a special motorcycle license (A) and must be at least 18 years old. Anyone with a car license is not allowed to ride a motorcycle with this. Motorcycles are allowed to go as fast as cars, according to the speed limit on the road. The driver of a motorcycle is usually dressed in a special motorcycle suit. Wearing a helmet is mandatory with a motorcycle.

The difference between a motorcycle and a moped or motorized bicycle is obvious to most people. The difference between a moped and a moped is often less familiar.

Moped

Moped features

A moped or moped is a motorized two-wheeler with which you cannot ride faster than 45 kilometers per hour. A moped has either an internal combustion engine of up to 50cc or an electric motor with a maximum power of 4kW. Sometimes the engine of a moped is souped up so that it can be driven faster than 45 kilometers per hour. This is possible, but not allowed. To ride a moped, you need a special moped license (AM). If you have a car license, you may also ride a moped with that. Wearing a helmet on a moped is mandatory. For a moped, you need a yellow license plate with black lettering. You must be at least 16 years old to ride a moped.

What is known to the general public as a scooter, for example, a Vespa, is simply a moped with a low entry level. Vespas and other "scooters," of course, are subject to exactly the same rules as a regular moped.

Moped features

A moped is a type of moped. On a moped, you can travel up to 45 kilometers per hour, but on a moped, you cannot go faster than 25 kilometers per hour. In fact, a moped is a lighter version of a moped. Both the motorized bicycle and the moped fall under the category of scooters. The rules for licensing a moped bike are the same as those for a moped. Previously, a moped did not require a helmet, but since Jan. 1, 2023, you must always wear a helmet on a moped as well. For a moped bike, you need a blue license plate with white lettering. Like a moped, you must be at least 16 years old to ride a moped.

The difference between scooter, moped and moped

Since a scooter can be either a moped or a moped, only the differences between moped and moped are important. There are two obvious differences:

  • A moped allows you to drive faster (45 km per hour) than a moped (25 km per hour).
  • The license plate of a moped and a moped also differ: the moped has a yellow license plate with black letters and numbers, the moped has a blue license plate with white letters and numbers.
